Abstract

Over 90% of UV radiation is represented by UV-A rays which are able to penetrate the skin down to the dermis layer and produce a lot of oxidative stress 10 times stronger than UV-B. Green tea leaves have very high antioxidants, able to provide protection from UV rays. In this study the aim was to determine the strength of the UV-A Protection Factor contained in the green tea leaf extract gel formula of 5 concentrations of 0%, 14%, 16%, 18%, and 20% in vitro with UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Physical property tests included organoleptic tests, pH, viscosity, spreadability, and adhesion. The resulting UV-A Protection factor value will be interpreted using the Boots Star method or the UV-A/UV-B ratio. The data obtained will be analyzed using a one way ANOVA test with a 95% confidence level to test the differences in each concentration before and after treatment. The results obtained in this study were green tea leaf extract sunscreen gel that met the organoleptic good gel quality standards, pH, viscosity, spreadability, and adhesion were F4 and F5. The results of the Boots Star interpretation produce F1, F2, F4, and F5 indicating the ultra category and F3 being the superior category. The results of data analysis with different concentrations stated that there was a significant difference (p-value <0.05).
