Abstract

Gender equality is a form of feminism that develops in an environment to create equality between women and men in making choices, expressing opinions, and having the same rights in taking on roles in life. Feminism arises because of awareness of the consequences of an environment or conditions that are unfair for women. This study aims to find out how the glass ceiling is in structural leadership in student organizations at the Faculty of Communication and Informatics, Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. In this study, researchers used Harriet Taylor Mill's theory of liberal feminism in examining the problem. The research technique in this study uses qualitative methods. Data collection was carried out using observation techniques, interviews and literature review by taking samples using purposive sampling techniques. In this study, it shows that there is a glass ceiling phenomenon in student leadership opportunities in student organizations, the unequal opportunity for female students to become leaders is caused by gender stereotypes towards female students. Female students are considered unsuitable to be leaders, leadership is always seen as a male role because leaders are identified with masculine things. Female students have the right to be elected with a candidate for chairman from female students and based on their ability to lead. However, the research results show that patriarchal values cannot be separated from organizational culture. Female students still often experience actions or receive words that demean their abilities, such as men's assumptions about women that underestimate their ability to do something in organizational activities. So that female students still have to struggle to show their abilities and play an active role in the organization.
