Abstract

This research aims to analyze and interpret gender identity signs in The Danish Girl (2015) using Roland Barthe’s semiotic theory. This research purpose is to identify visually appear signs and hidden sign meaning in Einar Wegener and how is the signs related to Einar Wegener’s gender identity change. Qualitative research is used by the researcher with two main data sources, primary data, and secondary data. The primary data of this research is The Danish Girl that released in 2015. In comparison, the secondary data was taken from the script, journal, article, and information related to the movie that can be found online that helped to analyze this research. The result of this study after analysis found out there were few signs that caused Einar Wegener gender identity to change visually, that is men and women clothing. While the implicit signs found are the actors’ movements, facial expressions, and family support that influenced Einar Wegener’s gender identity change. Feeling supported and courage makes Einar Wegener dare to take the risk to find out his true gender identity.
