Abstract

PT. Natura Nusantara Persada is a company engaged in the charcoal briquette manufacturing industry. The average amount of production every month is 80,000 – 10,000 kg. The number of product defects in the company is 2-3% every month. This study aims to determine the factors that cause product defects and then determine the priority of improvement in the production process and suggestions for improvement. The method used is Gray Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) to find out the causes of product defects and prioritize repairs. The steps for setting priorities with Gray values are looking for series comparisons, setting standard series, reducing series comparisons with standard series, calculating gray relational coefficients, calculating the degree of gray relationship, and sorting improvement priorities from the smallest value. The results of this study are the 3 highest factors that cause product defects to crack, namely the operator is negligent in turning off the oven, the temperature of the combustion blend is not hot enough, the oven set up is too fast. The priority of repairs that need to be fixed are from the failure mode, the oven time exceeds the limit, the blending is not cooked, the oven settings are not suitable. Proposed improvements that can be suggested to improve the quality of briquettes are installing an alarm with a timer according to the set time, checking the combustion temperature, so that the combustion temperature is in accordance with the set one, the operator is more careful when setting up the oven and is not in a hurry. Gray FMEA can be used to find out the causes of defective products and prioritize repairs so that defective products can be minimized.
