Abstract

Indonesia occupies the first place with the largest number of K-Pop fans on Twitter. K-Pop fans, the majority of whom are in the adolescent to adult age range, often feel stressed and pressured by various things in their daily life. This underlies the writer to examine further about how K-Pop fans use Twitter as a cathartic medium. This catharsis or emotional channeling/release is explored based on the experience of K-Pop fans in channeling their emotions on Twitter. This study aims to find out how cathartic actions are carried out by K-Pop fans on Twitter. The research uses a phenomenological qualitative method by collecting data through interviews and additional data through Social Media Data Crawling Netlytic. The subject of this study was determined using a purposive technique with the criteria of a fan from Indonesia who is a member of the active K-pop fandom on Twitter and accesses Alternative Universe (AU) on Twitter. The analysis technique in this study uses Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and Social Network Analysis (SNA). The results show that K-Pop fans admitted that they often wrote tweets filled with emotional vent on their Twitter accounts, some of more often used a second account for catharsis. In addition, all interview respondents used Alternate Universe (AU) to release their emotions, namely through reading and writing Alternate Universe (AU) stories by reflecting themselves as characters in AU stories and as if they were the ones being told in the AU so that the emotions they felt can be overflowed as the AU story progresses. Meanwhile, the results from Netlytic show the dominance and consistency of the appearance of negative emotions on Twitter posts by K-Pop fans. Negative emotions that often arise, such as anger or annoyance, sadness, crying, and so on.
