Abstract
To increase the value of the hardness of a material, one way that can be done is by conducting a heat treatment process on the material. Knowing the effect of the heat treatment process on the level of hardness, microstructure, and density is the aim of this study. The carbonizing media for Al-Si material in this study used coconut shell charcoal with a mesh size of 80 (177 m), and the temperature was set at 400⁰ C with a heat treatment holding time of 75 minutes. The results of the Chemical Composition test showed that the raw material content contained 13.14% Si, then decreased after being cast to 13.08%, then decreased somewhat significantly after the heat treatment process at 12.65%. From these results, this specimen belongs to the hypereutectic Al-Si alloy. Density testing shows the highest raw material value at 2.80 gr/cm3. Then it goes down after being cast, which is 2,588 gr/cm3 then it goes up after the heat treatment process is 2,590 gr/cm3. Microstructure testing found that the light colored areas were Al elements, while the dark colored areas were Si elements. The results of the Micro Raw material and After Casting did not change much, while the micro photos after undergoing the Carburizing process contained a porosity cavity formed due to the high casting temperature and thick mold which caused the freezing process to be slow. that is, obtained a number with an average hardness of 132.89 VHN. And the lowest hardness value is the hardness value of the specimen after casting, with an average hardness of 76.32 VHN. Then for the level of raw material hardness, it is slightly proportional to the hardness value after the carburizing process, namely the average hardness is 121.1VHN.
