Abstract

Along with the increasing population in the city of Blora, the level of public consumption is also increasing. One of them is consumption of the use of plastic in daily activities, this is what causes waste problems in Indonesia. If not handled properly, waste will have a bad impact on the environment. In response to this, the community must be creative in managing plastic waste, one of which is by managing plastic waste as a mixed ingredient for making paving blocks. Paving block is one of the building material compositions made from a mixture of Portland cement or similar hydraulic adhesives, water and aggregate or without other additives which do not reduce the concrete bricks. Utilization of added materials for chopped PET plastic waste is also one of the solutions expected to reduce environmental pollution. The purpose of this study was to determine the compressive strength and water absorption of paving blocks with a ratio of cement: sand used 1:3, 1:4, 1:5 with variations in mixed PET plastic designs of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and using the hydraulic press method. In this study, the highest average paving block compressive strength was obtained at 40.89 MPa at a ratio of 1:3 with a variation of 0% chopped PET plastic waste in paving blocks. While the smallest average compressive strength value is 10.72 MPa compared to 1:4 with a variation of 15% with the addition of small pieces of PET plastic waste. The decrease in compressive strength occurs because the adhesion between the constituent materials does not work optimally so that there are many voids or empty gaps which make the paving blocks not solid when tested, so that the water-cement factor is not controlled and causes non-optimal results, shown in a 1:4 ratio which where the compressive strength results are lowest. This happens because the water used is less, thus interfering with the cementation process on the test object. In terms of water absorption, the highest average water absorption value is 4.4% at a ratio of 1:4 at 15% variation. and water so that there are cavities in the paving blocks which can trigger water to enter and be absorbed by the paving blocks.
