Abstract
Poverty is one of the biggest multidimensional problems in Indonesia. This study aimed to estimate the effect of human capital on the number of working men and women, and the effect of the number of working the number of working men and women on the percentage of poor people in Indonesia from 2018-2021. The analysis was conducted using a panel data regression model with the Fixed Effects Model (FEM) approach and the application of the chain rule on differentials. The results showed that males’ mean years of schooling and life expectancy had a negative effect on the number of working men, and the number of working men had a negative effect on the percentage of poor people, so that mathematically, males’ mean years of schooling and life expectancy had a positive effect on the percentage of poor people. As for females, females’ mean years of schooling had a positive effect on the number of working women, while females’ life expectancy had no effect on the number of working women. Then, the number of working women had a negative effect on the percentage of poverty. Therefore, mathematically, females’ mean years of schooling had a negative effect on the percentage of poor people, while females’ life expectancy had no effect on the percentage of poor people. Thus, the chain rule was not fully proven in this study. The government is expected to improve the quality of the population without differentiating genders in aspects of education, health, and employment, so that women will give birth to a more advanced next generation. In terms of health, the government is expected to provide affordable health insurance so that human development in the health sector can be fulfilled. The government is also expected to increase employment so that it can absorb male and female labor.
