Abstract

Viruses are obligate parasitic biological units that are microscopic in size and are pathogenic. Some cases caused by viral infections can cause acute illness and even death in humans. Katuk leaves (Sauropus androgynous (L) Merr) are a plant that is abundant and easy to find in Indonesia. Some of the flavonoid compounds present in katuk leaves are reported to have antiviral activity such as kaempferol and quercetin. This study aims to look at the antiviral activity of the ethanol extract of katuk leaves in the Newcastle Disease virus model. The extraction process uses the maceration method with 70% ethanol solvent. The media used for this study were 12 TAB aged 9-11 days and were divided into 4 groups, namely the virus control and 3 extract treatment groups with concentrations of 1, 10 and 100 µg/mL. Hemagglutination test is used to determine the amount of virus titer with allantoic liquid test material. The test results showed that the ethanol extract of katuk leaves did not have antiviral activity against the Newcastle disease virus which was indicated by the absence of a red dot in the middle of the well. The percentage of inhibitory power possessed by the three concentrations is the same were 0%. The qualitative results of the identification of the flavonoid compounds of katuk leaf extract showed positive results
