Abstract

Newcastle disease virus is an avian paramyxovirus that can attack the respiratory system. ND has the HN protein (hemagglutinin neuraminidase) agglutinating red blood cells. In general, antiviral treatment is treated with several things, such as the use of herbal plants. Ageratum conyzoides includes herbal plants that are used in traditional medicine. Ageratum conyzoides contains a chemical compound, namely quercetin (flavonoid). At moderate doses, bandotan leaves with ethanol extract show high antiviral treatment. This study aims to determine the antiviral activity of the ethanol extract of bandotan leaves against the ND virus. Ageratum conyzoides was extracted by maceration method. The extraction results were then inoculated into embryonated chicken eggs (TAB) aged 9-12 days and incubated for 3 days. A total of 12 chicken eggs were divided into 4 groups (viral control, 1µg/mL, 10µg/mL and 100µg/mL). During the incubation process, eggs are checked to see if the embryos die. The method used in this study was the hemagglutination test. The principle of the hemagglutination test is that there is a binding between the viral protein and the receptor on the surface of the erythrocytes. The results of the hemagglutination test showed no antiviral activity from the ethanol extract of bandotan leaves which was characterized by the absence of dot formation in the microplate wells. Several factors caused failure such as storage time and temperature. The length of storage will greatly affect the bandotan leaf extract because the longer the storage, the more it increases the activity of microorganisms which ultimately results in failure.
