Abstract
Poverty is one of the main economic problems in developing countries, including Indonesia. West Papua is one of the regions in Indonesia that has a high poverty rate. This study aimed to estimate the effect of the mean years of schooling and life expectancy on the number of working people, and the effect of the number of working people on the percentage of poor people in West Papua from 2017- 2021. The model used in this study was the Random Effects Model (REM) with a panel data regression with the application of the chain rule on differentials. The results of this study indicated that the mean years of schooling and life expectancy had a positive effect on the number of working people, and the number of working people had a negative effect on the percentage of poor people. Thus, mathematically, the mean years of schooling and life expectancy had a negative effect on the percentage of poor people. Thus, the chain rule was proven in this study. To reduce poverty, the government is expected to facilitate access to schools and provide other educational support assets so that people have more opportunity and interest in education. The government is also expected to carry out equal distribution of health facilities along with adequate equipment coupled with affordable health insurance for the lower class and easy access to hospitals. In addition, the government is also advised to hold training and socialize activities for the community to improve the quality of workers so that they have specific skills and expertise, so they can compete in the labor market.
