Abstract
Social media is one of the technological developments that exist on the internet by using internet networks to access it. Of the many social media applications today, the TikTok application is an application that is in great demand. The purpose of this research is to find out the motives and reasons for using social media TikTok as self-existence for students in Surakarta and then analyzed using the theory of phenomenology by Alfred Schutz. The method used is a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach. Data collection techniques are in-depth interviews and observation as primary sources and documentation as secondary sources. The results of the study explained that there were two motives, including because motive, namely students using TikTok based on past motives which were the reason or encouragement to actively use TikTok as a self-existence by following trends, being able to fill free time, and making friends through TikTok social media. Meanwhile, related to in order to motive, namely students using TikTok based on motives in the future, underlying the purpose of students using TikTok as a self-existence is to increase self-confidence, become a content creator, and even be able to become a promotional platform for economic needs.
