Abstract

Snacks for school children are types of snacks that are generally sold around schools and can be eaten or consumed immediately without further processing or preparation. The unhygienic processing process and the presence of a mixture of preservatives and others, result in snack foods being dangerous for children. This study aims to identify the content of borax and formalin in snacks for elementary school children in Kartasura District. This research is a type of descriptive research. The population in this study were all snacks from public and private elementary schools in the Kartasura District, Sukorharjo Regency with a total of 63 snacks with types of snacks such as cilok, penthol, cimol, fried vermicelli, tofu meatballs and tempura. Determining the number of samples in the study was calculated using the lameshow formula. The number of samples in this study were 43 samples calculated using the Lameshow formula and selected using purposive sampling technique. Tests for examining the content of borax and formalin in this study were carried out using the "ET Test Kit (Easy Test)". The results showed that (1) Of the 43 samples tested, 7 samples (16.27%) were positively identified as having borax content, while the other 36 samples (83.73%) showed negative results. The types of snacks for elementary school children that were positively identified as containing borax included fried cilok, tempura, cilok, chicken pentol and meatball tofu. (2) Of the 43 samples tested, 15 (34.88%) samples were positively identified as containing formaldehyde, while the other 28 (65.12%) showed negative results. The types of snacks for elementary school children that were positively identified as containing formalin included chicken pentol, cilok, tempura, meatball tofu, beef pentol, fried cilok and fried vermicelli.
