Abstract

This study aims to determine the microstructure and wear value of metal Matrix Composite for the application of Railway Brake Pads with the composition of Al 34%, Fe 23%, Mg 18%, C 20%, Si 5%. The fabrication process begins by mixing the predetermined composition, then stirring for 15 minutes until all the powdered materials are mixed evenly. After that, the pressing process is carried out using the cold pressing method, the mixed powder material is put in the mold that has been made. Then, pressing with a pressure of 20 KN is carried out in stages with every 2,5 KN being held for 1 minute, carried out until the pressure reaches 20 KN, and held for 15 minutes. After that, the sintering process was carried out at a temperature of 750 oC held for 60 minutes, and then cooled to room temperature. In the microstructure test (SEM) of the sample, it can be seen that there is still porosity and uneven distribution of each element formed on the sample surfave. SEM-EDX was carried out at 2 locations and 6 spots showing different weight concentrations at each spot. The result of the wear test using the Ogoshi method obtained a wear value of 5,52 x 10-7 mm2/Kg.
