Abstract

Background: As many as 2-4% of adolescents in the world's population are diagnosed with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) when they are 10 to 18 years old. Signs and symptoms of scoliosis include curvature of the spine, shoulder asymmetry, disproportionate waist circumference, and asymmetry of pelvic height, resulting in abnormal posture. One of the physiotherapy interventions for improving posture in patients with idiopathic scoliosis is schroth exercise. Schroth exercise improves postural balance and reduces curvature of scoliosis by strengthening the intercostal muscles and increasing the normalization of the diaphragm and breathing muscles. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of schroth exercise on posture improvement in AIS patients. Method: The design of this study is a critical review, which aims to criticize articles based on the literature with the type of Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) and an appraisal is carried out using the PEDro scale. Results: Based on a study of 6 selected articles the risk of mild to moderate bias showed that schroth exercise with physiotherapist supervision had an effect (<0.05) on reducing the cobb angle. Giving Schroth exercise) shows positive results in the form of a decrease in the degree of scoliosis after 10–24 weeks of treatment with 30–90 minutes of exercise in each session. This curve improvement is due to the schroth exercise program teaching corrected posture automatically, to stabilize and integrate it in everyday life. Conclusion: schroth exercise has been proven to be effective in reducing the degree of scoliosis in AIS patients.
