Abstract

This research examined social prejudice reflected in the novel. Social prejudice is the action or attitude addressed to an individual or group to justify based on society's judgments or experiences by another individual or group in the same environment. This research aims to analyze the social prejudice reflected in the novel. The researcher used the qualitative approach and sociology of literature theory by Alan Swingewood and Diana Laurenson to analyze the novel entitled We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson. The findings of this research showed: 1) there are four indicators showed social prejudice in the novel such as verbal rejection, avoidance, discrimination, and plundered 2) the social prejudice illustrated in the novel through character, setting, event, and style 3) the reason why Shirley Jackson wrote the novel based on her expression and experience.
