Abstract
The major problem of this study is to reveal the freedom and sacrifice as reflected in Roland Emmerich’s The Patriot. The objectives of the study are; to analyze the structural elements of the movie and to analyze the social background of both director and social life in that movie based on sociological analysis. In conducting this study, the researcher uses qualitative research in which the data are based on primary data, the script of The Patriot movie. While secondary data are reviews of the movie those are collected from various sources and other data which deal with the research. In analyzing the data, she applies two approaches. Firstly, structural analysis approach is used to analyze the elements of the movie. It consists of characterization, setting, point of view, plot, style, theme, intent or message, cast, mise-en-scene, cinematography, film editing, and sound. Secondly, the sociological approach is used to analyze the social background of the film that has setting of time in 18th century in North . The writer finds that the social background in America in 18th century is mostly still influenced by the Europe country such as Britain, and Europe country, that influence the economic, culture, education, entertainment and social class. Based on the analysis of the Roland Emerich’s The Patriot movie, the writer concludes that, Benjamin Martin it’s an American who has the custom like the common European people but he with his social background relays his life to his nationality that is America. He has sacrificed what he has including his career, even his two sons that finally Gebriel Martin and Thomas Martin ( Benjamin Martin’s sons ) died in English Army.
