Abstract

Infection is one of the most common disease that causes high morbidity and mortality. Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are bacteria that can cause local and systemic infections. The purpose of this study was to test the antibacterial activity methanol extract of kenikir leaves against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria and to identify the active compounds responsible for such activity. Extraction was done by soxhletation method using metanol pro anaysis. The concentration of the extract used at this research were 2, 4, 6, and 8 mg/disc. Antibacterial activity test was performed by disc diffusion method. The test results showed that the strongest antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found at a concentration of 8 mg/disc with the inhibition zone diameters of 16.63 ± 0.50 mm and 10.5 ± 0.5 mm, respectively. Thin layer chromatography of the extract was conducted in order to identify the secondary metabolites of leaves kenikir extract with silica gel as a stationary phase and ethyl acetate : glacial acetic acid : water (100:11:26 v/v/v) as a mobile phase, the results showed that the leaves kenikir extract contained phenolic and flavonoid compounds. Identification of compounds responsible for antibacterial activity was performed using contact bioautography method did not indicate any antibacterial activity.
