Abstract

The prevalence of poor sleep patterns among college students in Indonesia is quite high. One of the factors that can affect sleep patterns in college students is the high intake of caffeine. High intake of caffeine can inhibit the work function of adenosine which gives a signal of fatigue in the form of drowsiness to the body's cells. So, when caffeine binds to adenosine, the signal of fatigue is not accepted by the body's cells, drowsiness can be suppressed and remains awake. This study aims to determine the description of caffeine intake and sleep patterns in students of the Nutrition Science of Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. This study used a descriptive observational design with a cross sectional design. Sampling using consecutive sampling technique. The number of samples used was 55 samples which had been adjusted to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Caffeine intake data was obtained using the Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) for the last 1 month and sleep patterns were measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Univariate analysis was performed to describe caffeine intake and sleep patterns. As many as 83,6% of respondents had sufficient caffeine intake, another 16,4% had excessive caffeine intake. As many as 14,5% of respondents had good sleep patterns and 85,5% had poor sleep patterns. The highest average score among all sleep components was daytime dysfunction which is 2,04. As many as 17,4% of respondents with sufficient caffeine intake had good sleep patterns, meanwhile 82,6% of respondents with sufficient caffeine intake had poor sleep patterns. All respondents with more caffeine intake had poor sleep patterns. Students are expected to be able to reduce caffeine intake and improve the management of sleep habits so they won’t experience daytime dysfunction and get good sleep patterns.
