Abstract
Speaking is always regarded as an important skill in communication. Hence, the teaching should be conducted seriously. Since this skill can be mastered through practicing, so speaking teachers should be able to give proper feedback during the teaching process. This study aims to explore the types of feedback given by lecturers, problems faced by prospective teachers in speaking courses by using video conferences, and their perception regarding giving feedback in speaking courses by using video conferences at the English Department of UMS. This is a qualitative study in which the subjects were the fourth-semester students in English Department. The result of this study shows that five types of corrective feedback are used by the lecturer at the English Department of UMS such as recast, elicitation, explicit, repetition, and clarification request. Repetition is an effective feedback that can help them improve their speaking. The problems faced by prospective teachers are (1) lack of confidence, (2) limited vocabulary, (3) fear of making mistakes, and (4) lack of fluency and pronunciation. The prospective teachers' perception on lecturer corrective feedback in speaking courses by using video conferences is (1) fun, (2) helpful, and (3) challenging. It can be concluded from finding that most learners find corrective feedback highly helpful and, thus, need and wish to be corrected regularly in speaking class. The study could implies that the lecturer would continue to provide feedback to students during the learning process and the students could find solutions and solve problems they face in supporting the learning process.
