Abstract

Background: Chondromalacia patella is the softening, thinning, and degradation of the cartilage under the patella and can also be interpreted as patellofemoral pain syndrome, a condition that can affect someone younger or older. In adolescents, adults to the elderly, this condition is usually caused by an injury that can cause intra-articular cartilage damage and osteoarthritis. It may also be caused by factors such as knee muscle weakness, imbalance, malalignment, inflexibility of the lower extremities, pelvic muscle weakness and changes in neuromuscular control. Manual intervention therapy can have a direct effect on cases of chondromalacia knee which can help reduce pain, reduce stiffness, and improve physical function. Objective: to determine the acute effect of manual intervention therapy for pain, range of motion, and functional activity in patients with chondromalacia knee. Methods: quantitative research, this type of research is Quasy Experimental with a case series study approach and uses a research design in the form of a Time Series Design. Data collection techniques by means of questionnaires, observations, and interviews. The research instruments used were the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) to measure pain intensity, the goniometer to measure the range of motion of the joints, and the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) to measure functional activity. Data analysis technique using descriptive analytic. Results: Based on the results of manual therapy interventions in the form of stretching the quadriceps muscles, stretching the iliopsoas muscles, stretching the erctor spine, stretching the adductor hip, and manipulation of the lumbar spine, it has a good effect in reducing pain in the knee, increasing the range of motion of the knee joint, and increasing the patient's functional activity. Conclusion: In chondromalacia knee patients, manual therapy intervention has been shown to reduce pain intensity, increase joint range of motion, and increase functional activity.
