Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the representation of the cultural tradition of Nyadran shown in the TV program of Si Bolang in the episode of Kaloran, Temanggung, Central Java. This study used Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, which analyzed the visual images that appear, containing meanings or symbols related to the Nyadran tradition. This research method was a qualitative type using a connotation and denotation approach to find meaning in a sign. The sampling technique used in this study was purposive sampling to find a suitable sample according to the needs of the research. The results of this study indicated that there was a cultural representation in a tradition in the form of a mutual cooperation value and community efforts in preserving and also introducing traditions to all circles. Furthermore, there was a moral message that was used as a general basis for people who had gratitude and obey God. It could be concluded that the Nyadran tradition in the program of Si Bolang had been embedded in every activity in social life, becoming a cultural norm or custom for people in Indonesia, especially in the Central Java region
