Abstract

Poverty is one of the major economic problems faced by every country, especially developing countries, including Indonesia. East Java is one of the provinces in Indonesia with the highest poor population. This study aimed to estimate the effect of the average length of schooling and life expectancy on the number of working people, and the influence of the number of working people on the number of poor people in East Java province from 2013 to 2020. The model used in this study was Fixed Effects Model (FEM) with a panel data regression, applying the chain rule on differential. The results of this study showed that the average years of schooling and life expectancy had a positive effect on the number of working people, and the number of working people negatively affected the number of poor people. Thus, mathematically, the average years of schooling and life expectancy negatively affected the number of poor people. Thus, the chain rule was proven in this study. To reduce poverty, the government is expected increase opportunities and types of scholarships so that more people can get education. The government is also hoped to facilitate the access to health facilities in all regions so that they can be enjoyed by all levels of society. Providing various training programs to the community in order to have the ability and expertise, in order to compete in the labor market can also be a viable solution.
