Abstract
Women and men were created to live side by side with the differences they have as a society. The differences between women and men in patriarchal culture are positioned unequally, women are dominated by men in various fields of life. The issue of gender inequality is widely used as the theme of a film, one of which is Before, Now & Then (Nana)'s film, which is a film with a female theme. This research is qualitative research with a descriptive approach using Roland Barthes’ Semiotics Theory. The results of this study show that patriarchal culture in the film Before, Now & Then (Nana) is implicitly represented through dialogue between characters and symbols of Javanese culture which are contained in two categories: (1) Patriarchal culture in the household: stereotypes, double burden , and marginalization, (2) Patriarchal culture in social life: sexism, subordination, and double standards.
