Abstract

Wind energy can be converted into mechanical energy or electrical energy by utilizing a wind energy conversion system in the form of turbines. Vertical axis wind turbines have the advantage that their construction is easy and can receive wind from all directions. The purpose of this study was to conduct an experiment on the variation in the number of blades of the NACA 4412 type with an angle of attack of 15° on a vertical axis wind turbine (TASV). Variable measurement is done by developing an Arduino-based digital measurement system. The method used in this study took data directly on the wind tunnel by varying the number of blades 1, 2, 3 and 4 at wind speeds of 2.5 m/s, 5 m/s, 7.5 m/s, 10 m/s and an angle of attack of 15°. The parameters measured include the number of blades, turbine rotation speed, wind speed, and power, as well as some of the parameters calculated including rotation efficiency, Coefficient of Performace (Cp) and Tip Speed Ratio (TSR). The test results showed the optimum revolutions produced without a generator and when using the generator at the number of blades 3 of 3391 rpm and 1592 rpm at a wind speed of 10 m/s. The optimal power obtained, at the variation in the number of blades 3 with measurements using both multimeters and Arduino, power was obtained of 0.127 Watts and 0.125 Watts. The results of the comparison of load rotations of the optimal number of blades obtained are volatile or changeable at each wind speed. The resulting optimal Performance Coefficient (Cp) value, at a wind speed of 7.5 m/s is at the number of blades 3 of 0.0367057 with a Tip Speed Ratio (TSR) value of 1.30.
