Abstract
Indonesia is the 4th most populous country in the world after China, India and the United States. This means that the issue of basic needs such as food becomes quite crucial as does wheat. This research was conducted to estimate the effect of import value, population, gross domestic product and exchange rate on the total volume of Indonesian wheat imports from the 5 largest wheat import partner countries in 2010-2020 using panel data regression with the fixed effect model (FEM) approach. The results showed that the exchange rate variable had a negative and significant effect on the total volume of wheat imports, while the value of imports, population and gross domestic product had no significant effect on the total import volume. The government is expected to be able to strive to develop wheat cultivation which can grow in tropical climates such as Indonesia by cooperating with experts and academics in the agricultural sector. In addition, the government should reduce dependence on imported wheat, such as substituting wheat with sorghum, which incidentally can be developed and thrives in Indonesia. In this way, dependence on wheat imports from abroad can be suppressed.
