Abstract
Wind is an abundant amount of energy, but its utilization is still small. The purpose of this study was to design a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) with a focus on determining the optimal number of blades to utilize the available wind energy. In the trial angle of attack -5°, 0°, 5°, 10°, 15°, 20°, 25°, 30°, 35° and found that the optimum angle of attack is at an angle of 15°. Variable measurements are carried out in two ways, namely by using a multimeter and an arduino-based digital system. The method used in this study was to collect data directly from the wind tunnel, using 1, 2, 3 and 4 blade NACA 2312 airfoils. The angle of attack was set from 15° with variations in wind speed of 2.5 m/s, 5 m/s, 7.5 m/s and 10 m/s. Parameters to be measured include: Number of blades, Turbine rotation, Wind speed, Power, and several parameters to be calculated include turbine rotation efficiency, Cp (Coefficient Power), and TSR (Tip Speed Ratio). The test results show that the rotation without generator load is more optimum using the number of blades 2 of 3828 rpm, then the rotation using the generator load is more optimum at blade 3 of 1511 rpm. Optimal power with multimeter and arduino measurements on blade 3 obtained power of 0.1232791 W and 0.123479 W. With the best turbine efficiency for blade 3 is 44.013%. The optimal Cp value is found in the number of blades 3 produced at wind speeds of 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 m/s, respectively 0.000291, 0.035349, 0.039293 and 0.023961 with TSR values of 1.00, 1.14, 1.18, and 1.27.
