Abstract

The electric power system is a system that connects power plants with consumers, electricity will be distributed through transmission lines, substations, and distribution channels. Because it’s very important to distributing electricity to consumers, a tool is needed to provide protection to the equipment at the substation. One of the disturbances that often occurs in Indonesia is lightning surge, this is because Indonesia has high rainfall. Lightning surge is also one of the disturbances that increases the potential for damage to equipment at the substation. Most important instruments at the substation that must be protected is the transformer which functions to distribute electrical power by increasing or decreasing the voltage at the substation. Transformers often use a protective device in the form of a Lightning Arrester to protect against Lightning Surge disturbances. Lightning Arrester itself is a tool that functions to protect networks and equipment in the electric power system against disturbances that occur due to lightning surges and circuit surges. The purpose of this study is to analyze the performance of the Lightning Arrester whether it is still optimum to protect the Power Transformer from Lightning Surge disturbances at the 150 kV Palur Substation. From the calculations, the result is maximum distance of the arrester installed in the transformer 1 bay is 22,5 meters, while the installation distance in the field is 3 meters, so the arrester is still able to protect the transformer because it’s still below of maximum distance price. Maximum voltage value that the Arrester can accept is 650 kV, that value is exactly the same as the Transformer TID value, which is 650 kV. So the Lightning Arrester is still able to protect the Transformer from Lightning Surge disturbances.
