Abstract

Film is an audio-visual mass communication medium that is useful for conveying a message to the audience. One of the films directed by Karuna Pictures directed by Teddy Soeriatmaja with the title Lovely Man. This film tells how a daughter who is looking for her father and turns out not to be as expected because her father is transgender. Then there was a conflict so the child asked to get to know his father again even though it was only last night. A transgender person is someone who has a gender identity that is different from their original gender from birth. In Indonesia, transgender people are often controversial because their existence is still considered a taboo in society. This study aims to find out how the audience interprets a message on the portrayal of transgender people in the film Lovely Man, based on the experiences of subjects who often interact directly with transgender people. The theory used in this study is the theory of analysis reception initiated by Stuart Hall. This research used qualitative descriptive methods and data collection techniques using interview methods. This study tried to use three positions in seeing how the audience interprets messages from the media with dominant reading, negotiated reading, and oppositional reading to obtain information from the subject under study.
