Abstract
Cast iron has played an important role in human development so it demands the availability of good quality materials. To improve the mechanical properties of metal materials, it is necessary to add alloying elements to the composition of metal materials. This study aims to determine the effect of the addition of nickel and magnesium on the composition, microstructure, and hardness of nodular cast iron. This study uses FCD (Ferro Cast Ductile) as the main material and then melted in an induction furnace. The process of forming spherical graphite (nodular) cast iron is carried out with an open ladle system, adding 400 grams (4% mass) of nickel and 400 grams (4% mass) of magnesium which are placed at the bottom of the 10 kg capacity ladle just before the molten metal is poured into the mold. The results showed thatalloy compositions of cast iron having a magnesium content exceeding AFS (Atomic Fluorescence Spectrometry) required levels. The increasing percentage of Ni and Mg content in nodular cast iron resulted in larger spherical graphite grains, more ferrite and less pearlite. Meanwhile, based on tensile testing, the value of tensile strength, yield strength and modulus of elasticity in nodular cast iron tends to increase with increasing percentage of nickel and magnesium.
