Abstract

Bullying behavior is still common, especially in higher education institutions in Indonesia. Bullying behavior can cause individuals to close themselves in their social environment. The role of the closest person can help victims of bullying become more open about the cases of bullying they experience. This scientific research aims to find out how victims of verbal bullying can finally open up about their cases of verbal bullying and explain how they manage their personal information based on 5 rules of Communication Privacy Management (Culture, Gender, Motivation, Contextual, Risk-Benefit Ratio). This scientific research is a qualitative descriptive study with data collection techniques through interviews conducted to 4 informants of victims of verbal bullying in the Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. This scientific research uses the Self-Disclosure and the Communication Privacy Management Theory to find out how the victims of verbal bullying can finally open up about the bullying they are experiencing. The results of this study indicate that victims of verbal bullying can be more open about the bullying case to their close friends that they can trust, the four informants also regulate how they disclose their personal information and what information they disclosed to their close friends regarding cases of verbal bullying they experience.
