Abstract

Visual reasoning abilities have an important role in problem-solving and the success of learning mathematics. One of the mathematics subject matter that requires visual reasoning skills in solving problems is quadratic functions. Learning styles and visual reasoning have an important role in solving problems. Honey and Mumford's learning styles are categorized into four groups, namely activist, reflector, theoretical, and pragmatic. This study aims to describe the visual reasoning abilities of class IX students in the quadratic function material based on Honey Mumford's learning style. This research method is a qualitative approach with a case study design. The research subjects were 30 class IX students of SMP N 2 Karanganyar. The data collection techniques used were Honey and Mumford's learning style questionnaire, visual reasoning ability tests, and interviews. The instrument was validated by two expert validators. The data is validated using the triangulation technique. Data analysis techniques consist of data reduction, data presentation, and concluding. The results of this study indicate that activist students can fulfill interpretation and application indicators, except for determining the coordinates and x-axis points and calculating the area of a triangle. However, activist students have not been able to meet the investigative indicators. Reflector students can fulfill the three indicators of visual reasoning, namely investigation, interpretation, and application. Students with this type of learning style can determine the intersection points and vertices of triangles, calculate the area of triangles, draw graphs of quadratic functions, correctly identify picture information in picture in word problems, be able to determine quadratic function equations based on information in picture correctly, and can do solving steps and provide conclusions related to solving the problem appropriately. Theoretical students can fulfill the three indicators of visual reasoning, namely investigation, interpretation, and application. Pragmatic students can fulfill visual reasoning indicators, namely interpretation and application, except for calculating the area of a triangle. However, pragmatic students have not been able to fulfill the visual reasoning indicator, namely investigation.
