Abstract
Masculinity is a concept that exists because of the social construction of men. This concept of masculinity explains that men are a gender that is very attached to being strong, ambitious, active, aggressive, violent and logical. Masculinity is very close and related to the film. Pad Man is a film by R. Baiki which is based on the true story of a male activist named Arunachalam Marugantham who has an extraordinary mission and determination to provide sanitary napkins for women in rural areas. This true story shows that the nature of masculinity in each culture can be different. Therefore, this study will describe the representation of masculinity in the film Pad Man with the aim of research to find out how masculinity is represented by an activist in the film Pad Man. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research that uses a critical thinking framework with an identity representation theory approach. Data were collected by observing and documenting the film Pad Man. This study will use several theories of communication, among others; the theory of representation of identity and the theory of semiotics of Roland Barthes. The object of research in this study is the Pad Man film by taking several pieces of the masculinity representation scene in the Pad Man film. The data analysis technique can be done with a qualitative analysis model in which the point is to analyze the interactions between the research components and the data collection process during the research process. The results of this study show that there are four aspects of masculinity depicted, namely: appearance, love/family, leadership/respect, and money/success or depicted from outward appearance (body shape and posture), feelings of love and attitude towards family, how to lead, respect. , and success.
