Abstract

Gray cast iron is a material that is widely used in the metal casting industry. Because this material has good castability and is relatively inexpensive, gray cast iron is widely used in important engine components such as engine blocks, train brake linings, and so on. The graphite in cast iron is usually in the form of flakes. Due to these graphite flakes, the fractured surface has a gray appearance as the name implies. In the molten state, gray cast iron has high fluidity at the casting temperature. This is useful in castings that have complex shapes. This research was conducted using a tensile test method to determine the yield strength, tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and plasticity of gray cast iron. These four properties are the most important mechanical properties. The results of this study indicate that gray cast iron produces a tensile strength value of 529.72 N/mm² and a yield strength of 297.81 N/mm². Meanwhile, the modulus of elasticity of gray cast iron produces a value of 4290 N/mm² and a plasticity of 24.42%. Keywords: gray cast iron, tensile test, mechanical properties
