Abstract

This research aims to discover fans decoding towards four BTS songs in the album Love Yourself: Answer as well as the self-esteem issue contained in that songs. The name of BTS fandom is known as ARMY, which stands for (Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth). Like the name, they are perceived as a group of people who are aware of young people's issues. This research is qualitative descriptive using the reception analysis method. The primary data was collected through in-depth interviews and non-participant observation with three BTS fans who have different backgrounds. Afterward, the data are grouped into several categories; ARMY fans decoding towards the meaning of the four song in the album Love yourself:Answer, ARMY fans responses to self-esteem issue, and cultural gap that is perceived as international fans. The result of this research shows that the fans’ loyalty does not necessarily make their decoding always perfectly symmetrical with BTS's encoding. There are participant who are in negotiated position. It is influenced by the aspect of participant’s educational background. In addition, for the participant who are in oppositional position, it is influenced by the aspects of knowledge and media references. Furthermore, the self-esteem code contained in the four BTS songs is symmetrically transmitted. The code guides the message into the social practice of all participants. Which, ARMY fans' reception of it is forming a new perception, ideology, value, and behavior.
