Abstract

The development of the internet world brings a lot of influence on individual interpersonal communication. In this era of a borderless world, the internet that we have known only for browsing, e-mailing, chatting is now often used to play games and is better known as online games. This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship negative signifikanbetween online game addiction and interpersonal communication among students at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. The sample selection used a purposive sampling technique with the subject of Muhammadiyah Surakarta University students who were active and playing online games either through smartphones or computers with a total of 538 students. Subjects were 299 women (55.6%) and 240 men (44.6%). The hypothesis in this study is that there is a relationship between online game addiction and student interpersonal communication. The data collection instrument used in this study used an online game addiction scale, namely the Lemmens Game Addiction Scale compiled by Fransisca Gradistia Bai. (2015) and for interpersonal communication using the interpersonal communication scale. The results of the Spearman Rho correlation test resulted in a correlation coefficient score of -0.637 with a significance value of p = 0.000 (p < 0.01). The results of the data analysis indicate that there is a significant negative relationship between online game addiction and interpersonal communication. This shows that the higher the addiction to online games, the lower the interpersonal communication. On the other hand, the lower the online game addiction, the higher the interpersonal communication.
