Abstract
The city is always depicted by geography as the embodiment of its physical development and structure, also demographics as the embodiment of the process of population growth in it. Surakarta City which only distributed around 44.04 km2 in 2016 had a population of 514,171 people with a population density of 11,675 people/km2 and in 2020 it increased to 522,364 people with a population density of 11,861 people/km2. This population density is supported by the presence of land use which is dominated by settlements as much as 28 km2 or equivalent to 60% of the city area filled with residential buildings. Limited land territory, continuing population growth, and increasing population density conduct a logical consequence of declining settlement quality if it is not accompanied by long-term planning and handling. The purpose of this study is (1) to analyze the development of the quality of slum settlements based on spatial variations in Surakarta City in 2016 and 2020 and (2) to analyze the relationship between the distribution of the quality of slum settlements and the spatial structure in 2020. The sampling method is stratified proportional random sampling with slum blocks as objects; the secondary data is shapefiles of slum settlements in Surakarta City in 2016 and Landsat Imagery in Surakarta City in 2020; the data tabulation is using ArcMap as a data overlay instrument software and slum settlements grading criteria which generate comparisons and correlations. The study results show that in 2016 six slum areas have spatial variations and the slum settlements' quality is high - therefore in 2020, the value of dignity decreased which means that the quality of settlements has increased to low slum settlements. The distribution of slum settlement quality in Surakarta City in 2020 dominates the sub-center of the city service area I which is located in the Districts of Pasar Kliwon, Serengan, and Jebres.
