Abstract
In recent years natural ingredients have been studied as agents for the prevention of dental caries with an ecological approach utilizing natural ingredients with antimicrobial properties, is a successful alternative strategy to prevent caries. The purpose of this Scoping review is to find out what natural ingredients have the potential to prevent dental caries and what active substances are contained in natural ingredients that can help prevent dental caries. Method: This scoping review uses PCC (Population, Concept and Context). Natural ingredients as a population, the concept of preventing dental caries and the context is the prevention of dental caries from the early stages of caries. The search was conducted from July-August 2022 using 3 databases: (1) PubMed, (2) Wiley, (3) ScienceDirect. The keywords used as a guide to find sources of dental caries, natural ingredients, caries prevention. The stages of article selection are described in detail using the PRISMA flow. Results: From this study, it shows that the natural ingredients that are widely used are plants that have antibacterial and antimicrobial activity contained in the active substances possessed by natural ingredients. Conclusion: Natural ingredients have the potential to prevent dental caries because they have antibacterial and antimicrobial activity contained in the active substances contained in these natural ingredients that can inhibit the growth of cariogenic bacteria that cause dental caries, these results indicate that natural ingredients have the potential to be used as herbal products for the prevention of dental caries.
