Abstract

Rice is a strategic food commodity in Indonesia and is also classified as a staple food, hence its availability and consumption needs are essential to be considered. Around 90% of the Indonesian population consumes rice as a staple food, with rice consumption estimates range as much as 113 kg/capita per month, so the national rice consumption is around 27 million tons per year. Boyolali Regency is considered a potential producer of rice since geomorphologically it is located between Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu or is located in the Groundwater Basin (CAT) which unequivocally has a great impact on soil fertility. This is supported by Boyolali Regency Government by closing housing expansion permit that utilizes rice fields. Recently, the agricultural land conversion to non-agricultural land is increasing along with the population increase as a result of the agricultural land decreasing. This study aims to determine the availability and consumption patterns of rice as a staple food in Boyolali Regency, and also the regional distribution of the surplus and deficit values of rice in Boyolali Regency using GIS spatial analysis.
