Abstract

Background : During the third trimester, the fetus stores more iron for itself as a supply for the first month after birth. If pregnant woman have anemia then the need for fetal iron reserves is not met, it can have an impact on the condition of low birth weight. LBW is a public health problem because it is one of the causes of the high infant mortality rate (IMR). WHO records that Indonesia is ranked ninth in the world with a percentage of LBW more than 15.5% of births every year. Objective : The purpose of this study was to describe the characteristics of research respondents, to examine research methods and the results of data analysis from scientific articles regarding the relationship between anemia in pregnancy and the incidence of LBW. Methodology : The method used in this study is a narrative literature review based on 10 articles. Based on search results with keywords in English (“anemia in pregnancy” OR “anemia in third trimester” OR “maternal hemoglobin” OR “iron deficiency”) AND (“birth outcome” OR “birth weight” OR “low birth weight” OR "perinatal outcome"). The inclusion criteria used in the search for articles were articles published in the last 10 years (2012-2022), cohort study design, indexed by Scimago Q1-Q4, research subjects were pregnant women in their third trimester, study subjects had comorbidities such as diabetes and HIV, full text in English. Article search exclusion criteria are articles that cannot be accessed. Results : The representation of prevalence in third trimester of pregnancy in 6 selecte articels was > 20% and the average prevalence of LBW due to anemia in pregnancy was > 10%. A total of five articles have an average p-value < 0,05 and one articles have an average p-value > 0.05. Conclusion : there are five articles have a significant correlation and one articles haven’t significant correlation between anemia in pregnant women and LBW. Therefore, it is necessary to have a role and support from yhe government and health office to prevent anemia in pregnancy in order to reduce LBW.
