Abstract

The role of journalistic photographers during the Covid-19 pandemic is very much needed. By delivering messages through visual power, readers are expected to understand the content of the message conveyed. This study aims to find out how the general public interprets and interprets Joshua Irwandi photo work entitled "The Human Cost of Covid-19" and sees the reader's position in responding to the photo in interpreting it against Covid-19. The type of research used in this research is descriptive qualitative. In this study, researchers used Stuart Hall's Reception Theory with an analytical method, namely Stuart Hall's encoding-decoding analysis. This study uses the Purposive Sampling Technique as a sampling technique and the researcher uses triangulation of data sources as a validity test by conducting in-depth interviews, observations, and literature studies to achieve the validity of the data. By presenting informants with different backgrounds, this study resulted in the audience's interpretation of Joshua Irwandi's photos which were very diverse and had more perspectives on his findings. So that the informants are in several positions in the reader category, this makes this research different from previous research. That is, there are audiences who are in a position to receive messages (Dominant Hegemonic Reading), audiences are in a position to receive messages but reject some messages under certain conditions (Negotiated Reading), and there are also audiences who are in a position to reject messages (Oppositional Hegemonic Reading). The position of the informants is categorized based on the various interpretations of the informants.
