Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the style of language and its function and to describe the language style in the novel of A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks which was published in 1999. This novel refers to the romance drama genre. This research is a qualitative research using a stylistic approach. The primary data source in this research is the novel of A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks. While the secondary data sources are taken from journal articles and theories related to research. The data collection technique is by analyzing the novel. The result of this research obtained 123 uses of language styles in total with 4 types of language styles, including 1 frozen style, 13 consultative styles, 81 casual styles and 28 intimate styles. In frozen style, the function of language style as an answer to Landon's questions and doubts. In consultative style, the functions are to reinforce for the impression of his arrival, to convince and prepare to be asked questions, to reinforce of the main character's reason, as an expression of surprise, and as an affirmation. In casual style has a function as a form of distrust, as a form of resignation, as an impression, as an emphasis, as an illustration. The function of the intimate style above is to strengthen the impression of an invitation, as a confidence booster as well as compliment, as support, as an amplifier of love and affection, to strengthen the message of happiness between two Landon and Jamie. On the other hand, the situation of the language style used by the main character is a situation that is touched, tense, surprised, awkward, relaxed, happy, and sad
