Abstract

Papua is famous for its natural beauty but is still experiencing problems related to parenting for children. Like one of the tribes in Papua, the Sougb Tribe, early childhood cannot explore themselves and have limited access. When children are able to walk, they will be taught to shoot, there are children sucking ‘glue’, cursing, or hitting their own friends. The purpose of this study was to determine the parenting pattern of children in Sougb culture and to determine the character of children formed from this parenting pattern. The sample in this study was a family in the 'Sougb tribe' who had six children but three of their children died. This research is a qualitative research with data collection methods in the form of observation and interviews. The results of the study show that the parenting style of the Sougb tribe is an authoritarian parenting pattern where children are required to comply with the rules of their parents. The care is given to boys or girls alike, namely to learn gardening, jumping, running, archery, and so on without prioritizing cleanliness, health, and education so as to reduce the quality of human resources. Even the results of the study showed that 3 out of 6 children in the study died when they were toddlers with cases of fever, heat, seizures, or had rashes due to lack of literacy related to health in children.
