Abstract

Coconut plays an important role in life, so there is solid waste that has not been maximized in processing, namely the cranium. Factors that affect the ability of coconut shells as adsorbents include cellulose, lignin, combustion processes, and activation processes. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the adsorption process in reducing the COD and TSS values of tofu liquid waste with activated carbon bio-adsorbents from coconut shells. The focus of this research uses the adsorption method using activated carbon. In this study, variations were used consisting of stirring speed (50 rpm, 120 rpm, and 400 rpm), adsorption contact time (15 minutes, 60 minutes, and 180 minutes), and adsorbent particle size (20 mesh, 70 mesh, and 500 mesh). ). The results showed that variations in stirring speed, variations in adsorbent size and contact time variations on adsorbent particles with activated carbon from coconut shells were effective in reducing COD and TSS levels below the tofu factory waste quality standards (COD 300 mg/L standard and TSS 200 mg/L) based on Minister of Environment Regulation No. 5 of 2014 concerning Wastewater Quality Standards, namely 616.667 mg/l to 112.75 mg/l with fast mixing speed (180 rpm) and slow stirring (80 rpm).
