Abstract

This research is entitled “Child Abuse Reflected in A Series of Unfortunate Events: A Sociology of Literature Approach.” This research focuses on child abuse in the novel entitled A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket (1999). The research aims to (1) identify the types of child abuse in the novel based on sociology of literature approach, (2) describe how child abuse is depicted in the novel based on sociology of literature approach, and (3) reveal the reasons why child abuse is specifically addressed in the work. The research used sociology of literature theory by Meiliana (2019). The data were in the forms of words, phrases, and sentences in the context of the dialogues and narration taken from the novel. This research uses document analysis as the method of collecting data and qualitative data analysis as the method to analyze the novel. The results of the research as follows. (1) All types of child abuse are in A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning novel. They are physical violence, sexual violence, mental violence, and neglect or negligent treatment, with mental violence being the most frequently shows and sexual violence the least frequently shows. (2) The depiction of child abuse through four elements of fiction such as character, setting, events, and style. (3) News on TV, the interest in scary books, the hatred of happy or cheerful storyline and ending, and the negative opinion on adults appear to be the reasons Daniel Handler or Lemony Snicket wrote the novel.
