Abstract
Female adolescent who consume less iron tablets will affect hemoglobin so that they are at risk of anemia. The prevalence of anemia aged 15-24 years based on Riskesdas 2013 was 18.4% and increased by 32% in 2018, including in moderate health problems (20.0%-39.9%). Iron supplementation is a strategy for controlling iron deficiency, but has an impact and side effect. This study aimed to determine the effect of iron supplementation on hemoglobin levels in female adolescent through literature review. The study design of this research used the literature review method with an experimental. Journals searched on google scholar year of 2011-2021, national reputation S1-S4 and international Q1-Q4, female aged 10-19 years old, not pregnant, iron deficiency anemia (mild-moderate), iron-folic acid supplement intervention. Exclusion criteria were fortified food interventions, multivitamin supplements. The search keywords are Effectiveness of iron supplementation on hemoglobin in female adolescent". Journals found were 9 with overall hemoglobin levels increased significantly. An effective intervention was given a dose of 50 mg of iron sulfate, frequency 2x/week, duration was 16 weeks, to anemic female adolescent, given after school breaks, had no side effects (nausea, constipation, dizziness, diarrhea). Side effects needed to be informed that they will disappear over time. There was effect on the supplementation if given a dose of 50 mg of iron sulfate, frequency 2x /week for 16 weeks.
