Abstract

Based on world prevalence data, 10.5% suffer from diabetes mellitus and it is estimated that it will increase by 12.2% in 2045. One of the risk factors for diabetes mellitus is central obesity, one of which can be identified by waist circumference. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between waist circumference and the incidence of diabetes mellitus in adult individuals and elderly. The research design used in this study is a Literature Review on a Cross Sectional study design by criticizing 9 articles from the last 10 years (2012-2022) which were selected from the "Pubmed" database of international reputation Q1-Q4. The keyword used "diabetes mellitus" found 563,645 articles and added "waist circumference" found 6,877 articles and added 2 filters "publication date 10 years", "english language", "free full text", "adult and middle aged" found 125 articles , then 27 articles were issued that were not cross sectional methods and 93 articles that did not provide data on diabetes mellitus obtained 9 articles that were carried out by abstract reviews. The highest prevalence of diabetes mellitus is in Shanghai City, China at 30.05%, which is a developing country in the Asian continent. There is a significant relationship between waist circumference and the incidence of diabetes mellitus with p value <0.05. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus increases with age, higher in men and higher in women, uneducated, urban residents, not doing physical activity, in smokers and former smokers, drinkers of alcohol, in ethnic minorities compared to white Caucasians, and in Scotland compared to England. There is a relationship between waist circumference values, having central obesity will increase the risk of developing diabetes mellitus. Therefore, it is necessary to intervene to maintain a normal waist circumference to prevent the incidence of diabetes mellitus.
