Abstract

Background : Sleep quality refers to the state of sleep experienced by an individual that produces freshness and fitness when wakes up. Good sleep quality in an individual indicates that physical, mental, fitness, and vitality are holistically good. Meanwhile, if the sleep quality of an individual is poor, it can cause decreased physiological and psychological health, fatigue, difficulty focusing and causes decreased academic performance. In the previous research conducted by Nariya in 2021, it was found that undergraduate physiotherapy students aged 18–25 years have poor sleep quality. So the researchers conducted a preliminary study on physiotherapy students in the 2018 entry year of Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta with the result that there were 66 students filling out the questionnaire PSQI and 52 students experienced sleep quality disorders. One solution as a preventive measure to improve sleep quality is yoga exercise. Yoga is a combination of stretching exercises and various poses with deep breathing and meditation that can improve the quality of life, relax the body, reduce pain, improve blood pressure, and improve breathing. This condition is needed by someone to get a better quality of sleep. Purpose : The purpose of the research that the researchers conducted was to determine the effect of yoga exercise on sleep quality in physiotherapy students at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. Methods: This type of research uses a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group design and the sampling technique uses purposive sampling, based on the inclusion of 2018 UMS physiotherapy students who live in UMS, Surakarta, and surrounding areas with a minimum number of 10 respondents. The research sample consisted of 3 respondents who dropped out, so that the number of samples studied was 23 respondents. Results: The result of the wilcoxon test at experimental group with a p value 0.004 then there is an increase in sleep quality and control group with a p value of 0.132 then there is no increase in sleep quality. The Mann Whitney obtained a p value of 0.002, indicating that there is a significant effect on the PSQI between the experimental group and the control group. So that, The conclusion of this study is that there is an effect of yoga exercise on sleep quality in physiotherapy students at the Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta.
