Katuk (Sauropus androgynus) is a plant that contains many bioactive chemical compounds that contain high therapeutic value. Katuk is often used as a traditional medicine, especially in Asian countries. The purpose of this literature review is to determine the pharmacological activity and content of chemical compounds that have been tested both in vitro, in vivo, and clinical trials, as well as the analytical methods used to analyze katuk chemical compounds. This literature review was compiled using articles that were searched through the ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases. The keywords used in ScienceDirect and Google Scholar are “Sauropus androgynus OR Katuk AND pharmacological activity AND analysis methods” and “Sauropus androgynus AND clinical trials”, while the articles available through PubMed use the keywords “Sauropus androgynus”. The inclusion criteria used were original articles or full text research articles regarding pharmacological activities, chemical compounds, and analytical methods of katuk (Sauropus androgynus) extract with a range of publication years 2011-2021, while the exclusion criteria for this study were incomplete articles discussing pharmacological activities, chemical compounds, and methods of analysis of katuk (Sauropus androgynus) extract. From these criteria, 17 articles were obtained that met the inclusion criteria. The chemical compounds contained in katuk are naringenin, papaverine, squalene, cis, cis, cis-7,10,13-hexadecatrienal, 9,12,15-octadecatrienoic acid, hexadecanoic acid, flavonoids, phenols, and -carotene. pharmacological activities that have been reported, namely lactation induction, antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, immunostimulant, antiobesity, antibacterial, antianemia, and increasing uterine weight activity. Katuk analysis methods that are often used are High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), and Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS).
