Abstract

Today's rapidly growing social media capabilities allow one to communicate and connect with people in various parts of the world through various uploads of information such as photos and videos. This is often used by parents to do sharing in order to get validation of their parental competence. However, behind the large benefits provided, social media also has negative impacts such as misuse of information by irresponsible parties, privacy violations, identity theft, online pedophiles, kidnappings, etc. This study aims to reveal the use of impression management strategies owned by parents, especially mothers in sharing photos and videos of their children on social media as an indirect self-presentation using impression management theory. In this study using a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques derived from observations, interviews and documentation studies. The results of the study found that there were 3 self-presentation strategies used, namely ingratiation, self promotion and exemplification with performance claims and exemplification being the most widely used strategies by informants.
